After reading about this article on BBC News, I did a quick search on Google and found a website on Doctor’s Slang.
All I can say is that some of the slang is absolutely shocking.
Here’s a small selection for you (enjoy):
Cut and Paste – To open a patient, discover that there is no hope, and immediately sew him up (or almost immediately – sometimes young surgeons practice surgical techniques for a while).
Frequent Flyer – Someone who is transported to and from hospital on a routine basis (also someone who spends more time at the local hospital then most employees and is known by all staff members including Environmental Services)
BUNDY – But Unfortunately Not Dead Yet
Donut of Death – CT scanner
GLM – Good Looking Mum
Go to Ground – fall out of bed or chair
Granny Dumping – dumping elderly relative in A&E; often happens just before Christmas or family holiday aka the hospital granny-sitting service
DUB – Damn Ugly Baby
FABIANS – Felt Awful But I’m Alright Now Syndrome
File 13 – The Trashcan
GOA – Gone On Arrival (police turn up, ambulance turns up, fire brigade turns up, patient doesn’t)
God’s Waiting Room – intensive care unit and/or geriatric unit

A 15 year old cancer patient who had his arm amputated at a Leeds hospital, after getting a tumour at the top of his limb, has now had his shoulder re-created using another part of the arm… the elbow. Doctors used tissue and muscle from the unaffected elbow. When the tumour was found surgeons took urgent action and had to amputate the whole arm and shoulder joint to make sure the cancer didn’t spread. The re-construction of the joint will enable him to have an artificial arm which can now be supported from the shoulder joint. This will give him more mobility and a easier life.
The team at WWCTN hope him the best for his future.
