iPods are Bulletproof?

18 10 2008

I was just reading about this extremely strange story. A soldier in Iraq was recently saved from certain death by his 20GB iPod!

The iPod’s metal casing saved the soldier, taking a bullet that would have pierced his armour and killed him in any other situation. However i don’t recommend that you try this out as you would be facing certain death due to the fact that you probably don’t have the full military kit!

I find this truly amazing on how such a small electrical appliance could save someones life. Just shows that in danger, the objects around you can actually help

However its slightly worrying that this man was actually wearing his iPod during a battle. Just goes to show.

The soldier’s life was saved… but the iPod was broken beyond repair (really!).

A Royal Visit To Google

16 10 2008

This is another of our great monarchy’s visits to a prestigious headquarters. However this time it may be a visit that will be an interest to us Internet dwellers.

Google has an excellent reputation for a various selection of designs on their homepage which mark current events. (Google Doodles). These can be very interesting and clever seeing as they can make a current even form into the word ‘Google’.

We all love Google and the services it brings to us but a Royal visit is something that is extremely good for Google as it recognises how important a company they are to the internet. Google has launched many a good site over its “reign” on the internet which will continue until the Internet dies and beyond. One of there better projects, Youtube hosts the Royal channel which is regularly updated. This, although slightly ridiculous, is quite interesting on how our Monarchy gets interested in what the population are liking.

The queen and Duke of Edinburgh visited the headquarters, although the elderly have a reputation of being clueless towards the internet were given in demostrations of Google running and even got involved in talking to the Google President of Europe, the Middle East and Africa. (This would be so cool for the likes of us here at WWCTN, maybe in the future!)

Hopefully the couple understood a word in the demonstrations because of my own experience Elderly people, as i have said, are clueless towards Google etc… Although maybe you and I have learned something today about this.. Old people are not always clueless towards futuristic technology. Perhaps you could teach them.

1 in 10 of European People Are At Risk of Losing Their Hearing (Mp3′s)

13 10 2008

A recent study of towns and cities has unveiled that 1 in 10 people are at a high risk of losing their hearing because of ipod’s and mp3′s.

Yes i know it looks cool if you are going about with the coolest songs on and that other people hear them and they think its cool too. But is it worth losing your hearing for? I would say absoultuely no!

A recent EU assembly has said that over 10 million users are at risk of this, because of their own fault of keeping their sound up too high! This is truly shocking that you would even want to do this to your hearing! Mostly children and teens are affected which makes it worse because you could have no hearing for the rest of your life! There are different scales for different volumes but the worst one has to be the fact that if you listen to your mp3 adding up to an hour a day at full volume then you could lose your hearing permanently!

The highest amount of decibels a mp3 is allowed to go, at the legal limit of the EU, is 100 decibels but some people think this is too high because people are damaging their hearing beyond recognition. The harmful hearing loss can start at 89 decibels ! Only about 3/4 up your mp3.

So what can you do?

The things you can do

  • Lower your mp3 to about half volume (for a start!)
  • Try and lower the time that you listen to your mp3 in a day.

As to help the cause the EU will look into if there is any improvements could be made in the technical sector see if they can minimise hearing damage. This has truly woken me up as i listen to my ipod over 3/4! I don’t think i will be doing that again. Remember to think whether your mp3 is too high or not because chances are you are damaging your hearing.

An example of a device which may be damaging your hearing.

Space Elevator Plans Announced

5 10 2008

Plans have been announced today to create something called a space elevator.

The rough idea behind the plan is that an elevator would be made to take humans into space using a genius counterweight system.

This could take elevator pitches to a new level. :D .

Large Hadron Collider.. Broken. (Great!)

21 09 2008

We previously reported about the LHC, feared to end the world and is the World’s Biggest Physics Experiment in our history. The experiment, that is based near Geneva in a 27km tunnel in a circular shape, has recently broken down.

A section of the experiemnt, sections 3-4, broke down and leaked. The whole experiment was shut down while engineers were let in but they had to get back as a tonne of helium gas leaked into the chamber. Fire crews were dispatched to the scene. Scientists now know that the damage is worse than they thought and will take months to repair. The lowest amount of time they think it could take is up to 2 months.

So if you believe that this is going to kill you. Well at least you have “another” 2 months to live before you “die”.

:D

The Large Hadron Collider: The Newest Physics Experiment.

11 09 2008

Yesterday, the world was shaken with worry over the world’s biggest experiment ever. The Large Hedron Collider finally had the switch thrown on (although not literally because they are really boring and don’t have them anymore) on this project. The world has been convinced by the scorning media that there was a chance that the world would end. You would have more chance of being eaten alive by an evil lunchbox than switching this machine on. Its like turning on a light and saying that it will blind you. The media took advantage of the fact that scientists can never prove that there is no chance of something happening. In an interview a scientist did say that there is a chance because he couldn’t lie. The journalist, however, reacted in a typical media way and told the world that the universe would end when this is seriously not true.

The experiment, the biggest experiment ever carried out in the history of the Earth, has been designed so that scientists can investigate the effects of the “big bang” the start of the universe or to see if religion is right and the universe was started by God. The machine will either prove or destroy theories that have been gathered over 5000 years of research of the Earth and the whole universe. Scientists are using the machine to see if there is actually a “God Particle”.

The experiment spans over 27km of Geneva in a great circle 100 metres under the ground. The LHC has taken nearly 20 years to be designed and built. Millions and Millions of every currency have been put into the project leaving questions being asked. These questions include; Why can’t we use all this money for world hunger ? Why can’t the money be used for better things ? Isn’t this a waste of time ?. Answers can only be given by the prestigious world scientists who are working on the project.

In a few days the next phase of the operation will come into place with the particles finally colliding and creating minature black holes which will disappear in no time. Full energy will then be issued later in the year expecting to be on Boxing Day of this year into next year. So all readers of this post. You won’t die yet.

Thanks, Nathan.

Google Chrome : The Newest Browser

3 09 2008

This week has seen Google release its newest innovation, the Beta version of Google Chrome. The world’s newest web browser. With the popularity of Mozilla’s Firefox and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, Google’s task was never going to be easy. But Google have created a variety of totally new and unique features for their new browser. Including such things as; incognito mode, search history updates, tab moving and easier web use.

This browser has been designed to be very fast and to keep up with the variety of applications that need both graphics and multimedia. Google really have taken on a mammoth task. But they have came out winners this week after the unvealing of their browser wow-ed the technology crowd.

Google are still fighting the ongoing war with Microsoft for more popularity. With this crushing blow the people at Microsoft are surely reeling.

Google are certainly taking advantage of their sudden push, with the creation of many applications to keep up with today’s market of web browsers. Some of the applications that they have used are actually already used in Google’s Search Engines but have all been combined into this excellent Browser.

Chrome’s interface will include the web address bar also acting as the their own brand of search engine. Google have also been kind enough to let you choose what company you want to use your search engine on.

Things can only get better for Google now as they advance their major assault on the web, with Mozilla, Microsoft and many other companies all fighting for the highest place on web dominance.

Teenage Cancer Patient Gets Shoulder Re-created.

31 08 2008

A 15 year old cancer patient who had his arm amputated at a Leeds hospital, after getting a tumour at the top of his limb, has now had his shoulder re-created using another part of the arm… the elbow. Doctors used tissue and muscle from the unaffected elbow. When the tumour was found surgeons took urgent action and had to amputate the whole arm and shoulder joint to make sure the cancer didn’t spread. The re-construction of the joint will enable him to have an artificial arm which can now be supported from the shoulder joint. This will give him more mobility and a easier life.

The team at WWCTN hope him the best for his future.

Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 Released.

31 08 2008

Internet Explorer may not be the best of web browsers at the present minute ,with the competition of Firefox and Safari rising far above it. However don’t rule out using it yet. The Microsoft have recently released the next gen. of Internet Explorer, IE8 Beta 2. The new web browser is said to be ample to fulfil today’s competiton. The update has definitly brought it up to par with the likes of Firefox, Opera and Apple Safari. When Beta 1 was released the whole user interface of Internet Explorer had changed extremly.

When released in the final edition IE8 is thought too be a little ahead of the other competiton. New Features in the Beta 2 that weren’t in the Beta 1 version is the security pull down menu.

The browser is sure going to give the other competitors a run for their money.

Thank You,
